The First Days of Motherhood: Support, Breastfeeding, Pumping and big wins

Singapore [20 February 2025] I have the absolute best job in the world! This morning, I spent four hours with a brand-new family, supporting them as they navigated the first few days of parenthood. Their little one is just four days old, and this was my first visit with them—what a privilege to be part of such an intimate and special time.

Answering Questions and Easing Worries

The early postpartum days can feel like a blur of emotions, questions, and adjustments. Mum had so many thoughts running through her mind, and my role was to provide reassurance, knowledge, and hands-on support. We talked about everything that had happened since birth, from recovery to newborn feeding patterns, and I answered all the burning questions that come with those first few days.

Navigating Breastfeeding and Pumping Pain-Free (and big wins!)

A big focus of our time together was feeding—something that so many mums find challenging in the beginning. Latching was still tricky (which is so common in the early days), and we worked on different techniques to help make it more comfortable for both mum and baby. We also spent time talking about milk supply, how it transitions from colostrum to mature milk, and what to expect in the coming days.

Teaching and guidance. for breastfeeding and pumping

One of the biggest wins of the morning was with pumping. Mum had already been advised to start using a pump but had been experiencing significant pain with it. No one had explained that pumping shouldn’t hurt! We took the time to go through how her pump works, adjusting settings like cycle, vacuum, and let-down mode to make the experience more effective and pain-free. By the end, she was able to pump more milk than she had previously while feeling comfortable—an incredible breakthrough!

Hands-On Help and Real Support

Postpartum support is never just about feeding. In those four hours, I changed nappies, laid the baby down for sleep, talked about swaddling, and gave practical tips to help the whole family settle in. It’s a mix of listening, teaching, and being there to offer reassurance when it’s needed most.

As I left, I couldn’t help but feel so grateful for what I do. This family is doing an incredible job, and I’ll be back to see them again in a few days. The first days of parenthood are intense, but with the right support, they don’t have to be overwhelming.

If you're in the newborn phase and need guidance, know that you don’t have to figure it all out alone. Support is here when you need it! 💛
